John Jay Gets to State Olympiad for 26th Year

John Jay High School is the only school in the state to have achieved the distinction of competing at the New York State Science Olympiad for each of the 26 years this prestigious competition has been held.

On February 13, John Jay High School’s A team finished in second place in the Lower Hudson Valley Regional Science Olympiad competition, held at Byram Hills High School. The competition was fierce, as the top four schools, including John Jay, New Rochelle, Ardsley and Byram Hills finished within 12 points of each other.

John Jay will compete at the State Science Olympiad on March 19 and 20 at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with the aforementioned schools, plus Scarsdale, which finished in fifth place. John Jay’s two teams displayed the breadth and depth of its preparedness by earning 15 event medals, 11 for the A team and 4 for the B team, in events encompassing biology, chemistry, earth science, engineering, communication in science, and physics. Here are the results by event: Tyler St. Denis and Jeremy Zitomer placed third in Anatomy & Physiology; William Dingee and Derek Racine placed first in Cell Biology; Chloe Lee and Derek Racine placed fourth in Chemistry Lab; Claire Burns and Emma Squire placed fourth in Ecology; Irina Silver-Frankel and Timothy Song placed fifth in Elevated Bridge; Benjamin Firschberg and Julie Qiu placed first in Environmental Chemistry for the A Team; Claire Burns and Emma Squire placed second in Environmental Chemistry for the B Team; William Dingee and Benjamin Fischberg placed second in Forensics; Benjamin Fischberg and Alana Shizume placed third in Fossils; Christoper Curro and Alexander Lee placed fifth in It’s About Time; Logan Carbaugh and Samuel Johnson placed fourth in Mousetrap Vehicle; Alana Shizume and Timothy Song placed second in Ornithology; Chloe Lee, Julie Qiu and Jeremy Zitomer placed fourth in Picture This; Derek Racine and Tyler St. Denis placed first in Protein Modeling Challenge and Nathanial Cajigas and Evan Squire placed second in Sumo Bots.

There is a seven senior maximum per team of up to 15 members. The John Jay A Team includes: seniors Nathaniel Cajigas, Benjamin Fischberg, Chloe Lee, Julie Qiu, Derek Racine, Alana Shizume, Evan Squire; juniors William Dingee, Nina Pious, Tyler St. Denis and Jeremy Zitomer; sophomore Irina Silver-Frankel and freshman Timothy Song. The John Jay B team includes seniors: Claire Burns and Emma Squire; juniors Sarah Albala and Christopher Curro; sophomores Logan Carbaugh, Elliya Cutler and Samuel Johnson and freshman Alexander Lee. A special thanks goes to Micki Green and parents Mr. Song and Mr. Carbaugh for their support at the Regionals.
