South Salem's Haller and Duke Are in the NCAA Final
Katonah - Harvey School graduate Maddy Haller ’09 and her teammates at Duke University will play for the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship Sunday as the Blue Devils defeated their ACC rival Wake Forest Friday, 4-1 in the semi-finals.
Duke (22-3-1) and Stanford (24-0-1) face off at 1 pm at Kennesaw (Ga.) State University. In its semi-final match Friday, Stanford defeated another Duke ACC rival, Florida State, 3-0 to advance.
Haller, a native of South Salem and an HVAL All-Star while playing soccer for Harvey, is a key member of Duke’s defense. Coach Robbie Church said the defense played a huge part in winning the game against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. “Early in the first half, they had so many set plays and we did a great job of defending and didn't give anything up,” Coach Church said. Church had recruited Haller at Harvey. The junior starter at outside back has played all three years on Duke’s stellar defense, which has chalked up 16 shutouts this season, a school record, and allowed only 12 goals in 26 games.
Mollie Pathman scored two second-half goals, her second goal coming on a penalty kick - the first attempted by Duke all season, and the first allowed all season by Wake Forest (18-4-4). Goals by Kim DeCesare and Kaitlyn Kerr, gave the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead. Rachel Nuzzolese scored on a free kick for Wake Forest. Nuzzolese's second-half goal got Wake within one, but Duke scored shortly after to take a 3-1 lead. Pathman's second goal capped the scoring for the Blue Devils.
Both Duke and Stanford are seeking their first national title in women's soccer.
