The Community Center of Northern Westchester has received a grant from the Westchester Community Foundation to train low-income immigrant workers for jobs in the construction and hospitality industries.
The $12,000 grant supports programs launched by the Center and previously developed and taught by Center volunteers.
"This partnership with the Westchester Community Foundation will enable the Community Center of Northern Westchester to advance our important goal of providing help and hope for neighbors in need," said Sherry Wolf, the Center's Executive Director. "Our classes enable willing and eager clients to take a step toward self-sufficiency and success during these challenging economic times."
Multi-week classes in Basic Concepts of Construction and Introduction to Hospitality Skills will be strengthened thanks to the WCF grant, with funding now available for instructors and classroom materials.
"Enthusiastic volunteers brought the ideas and initial energy for the Center's training programs," Wolf said. "But the challenges and complications of running these important classes requires additional support, and this grant money is a big help." The Center also continues to offer classes in U.S. Civics for Immigrants (a course aimed to improve English proficiency through civics study), as well as other individualized learning programs including computer skills and basic English conversation.
Established in 1992, the not-for-profit Community Center of Northern Westchester provides supplemental food, clothing, and other resources to those in need in Northern Westchester County. The Center is sponsored by 28 churches, synagogues, schools and civic groups and operates with substantial volunteer support from the northern Westchester community.
The Westchester Community Foundation (WCF) is a nonprofit community endowment for the benefit of Westchester County. Its mission is to develop and manage philanthropic resources, and to distribute them in a way that is responsive to donor interests and community needs. The Foundation actively promotes charitable giving on behalf of the area's nonprofit organizations. WCF is a division of the New York Community Trust, one of the largest community foundations in the country with assets of approximately $1.8 billion.
