Bedford Man Charged Under Leandra's Law

The information below was provided by Bedford police and does not indicate a conviction.

A 43-year-old local man faces a felony DWI charge after Bedford police reported he was allegedly driving a car with a blood-alcohol level more than three times the state's legal limit with an 11-year-old child in the backseat.

Just after 11 p.m. Sunday night, Bedford police received a report of a possible accident on Long Ridge Road. Upon their arrival, police said they found two cars. The driver of one of the cars said that they had almost been hit head-on by the other driver, Wensley McKenney of Bedford.

After avoiding a collision, the witness said, they were able to turn around and block McKenney from continuing, then called police.

When they approached McKenney's car, police said they detected an odor of alcohol. McKenney failed field sobriety tests on the scene and was taken to police headquarters. McKenney submitted to a chemical test that revealed a BAC of .28, according to police. He was charged with DWI under Leandra's Law and aggravated DWI and released without bail pending a return to town court.

Leandra's law makes it a first-offense felony to drive while intoxicated with a child 15 and under.
