Conservation Presentation, Raising Puppies

And a meeting of interest for folks thinking about the small businesses economy in Westchester in 2012.

1. Town of Bedford meets

Bedford's Conservation Board presents tonight on its small lake and pond inventory and biodiversity mapping projects. The first step toward caring for the land is knowing what you have, says Simon Skolnik, board chair, and the projects have recently picked up steam with the help of a new board member. Find out how you can get involved in "mapping the town." Click here for the full board agenda. The meeting starts at 8 p.m. at town hall.

2. Raise a Guiding Eyes for the Blind Dog

There are a a lot of dogs walking around Katonah, but sometimes those adorable puppies you see with their handlers are being trained to become Guiding Eyes for the Blind dogs.  You, too, can become a "puppy-raiser." Volunteers welcome 8-week-old puppies into their homes and with full support from the nonprofit, and educate the puppies for a 14 to 16 month period before sending them off to their calling as a guide dog for a blind or visually impaired person.

Puppy raising classes are held on Wednesday evenings at locations alternating between the Bedford Hills Community Center and the Guiding Eyes training school in Yorktown Heights. Orientation classes, designed to prepare you for raising a puppy to become someone’s Guiding Eyes, are on Feb. 28, March 6 and March 20 from 6p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Canine Development Center in Patterson. People are required to attend all three classes. RSVP required.

To learn more prior to attending the class, please contact Nicole Guite at  845-230-6406 or nguite@guidingeyes.org.

3. Officials, landlords to meet in Mt. Kisco

If you count yourselves among the people concerned about the empty retail spaces in downtown Mt. Kisco—including the cavernous space that was formerly Borders Bookstore, you might be interested in meeting tonight at 6 p.m. at Village Hall. It's a public work session between Mt. Kisco trustees and commercial landlords, at which concerned citizens—who have recently taken to the airwaves and twitterverse to discuss the issues—are likely to attend.   Other major vacancies include the former downtown sites of Victoria's Secret, The Flying Pig, Edward Jones and Purple Passage.

4. Rippowam Cisqua Open House

The Rippowam Cisqua School is hosting a Winter Open House Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. to learn more about the school's Pre-K through Grade 4 program. The morning will include campus tours, remarks by Head of School Matthew Nespole, and a Question and Answer Session. Click here for details.

5. Laura Heady to talk salamanders

The Bedford Audubon Society is sponsoring a talk by Laura Heady Wednesday at 7:30 at the Katonah Memorial House. She will discuss woodland pool ecology and ways in which habitat fragmentation is threatening forest amphibians in the Hudson Valley. She'll also describe the "Amphibian Migrations and Road Crossings" project and how volunteers can get involved by witnessing these incredible spring migrations, documenting "Big Night" road crossings, helping amphibians survive their overland travel, and conserving important habitats in their community.
