Farmer’s Market Comes in from the Cold

Community Markets opened an extended season at JJHS today

Community Markets kicked off a newly extended season indoors on Jan. 9, at John Jay High School in Cross River.  An 11:00 a.m. ribbon cutting made it official, but shoppers arrived as early as 9:00 a.m. to get the best selection of local products.

Nine vendors offered an array of locally grown and produced wares including greenhouse-grown vegetables, stored fruits, locally roasted organic nuts, artisinal breads, pickles, grass-fed beef and Long Island-caught fish.

It's the first year for a longer season at the high school, though Community Markets has successfully continued throughout the winter at other locations.  "It's a bit of a gamble in this economy," admits market manager Ulrich Figge.

"But we had demand from our customers here and are hoping they turn out."

Traffic was high early in the day, but had slowed a bit by late morning, which was typical said Figge.  In addition to local advertising, Community Markets planned additional enticements for shoppers such as musical entertainment, lectures and a recipe contest.

Today, folk group Deuces Child maintained a springy atmosphere for shoppers.  "The music is a nice touch," said customer Tamra Maher, who had her arms full of fresh bread and fish.  "I am often in Vermont and the markets there are always festive. I'm happy to have the same options at home."

Mary Stoddard stocked up on apples, rolls and sauerkraut.  "We'd come no matter the weather, but it's nice to be indoors," she said.  Her husband Bob added that they were loyal customers and gardeners themselves, noting that the availability of greens in the winter was a bonus.

One of five indoor area markets, the John Jay location is open every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. through May 22.
