Key newcomers included Katya Harris, Heidi Lee, Jacinth Francis, and Courtney Alexander. The team was led by the scoring of Tessa Knorr and Hannah Paul, both of whom possessed strong dribbling and shooting skills.  The team’s frontline consisted of Jasmine Brouwer, Ava Gurman, and Julia Slater who provided strong rebounding and excellent interior defense.

The team finished the season with a 4-4-1 record that included numerous close finishes. Of particular note was a home game against Greenwich Catholic.  Harvey trailed by 10 points heading into the fourth quarter, but two successful free throws by Lily Alexander spearheaded a furious comeback that forced overtime.  After trading baskets in overtime the game was declared a tie.

Middle School Hockey

Coach Doug Plaskett said there are several reasons why Harvey’s Middle School hockey program has a bright future. The coach said one of the reasons is 6th-grader Dylan Tolbert who played great in front of the net.

Coach Plaskett also sees promise with members of the defense. “They prevented the opponents from entering our defensive zone and getting shots on our net,” the coach said. He said Adam Penino, Alec Roslin and Theo Rattner contributed to the strong defense.

Harvey’s offense also played an important role. The coach said the team had great contributions and leadership from Ben Gatta, Jamie Kelly, Kayla Mattocks, Andrew Muzin, and Matt Neporent. “These young players not only played their hearts out, but also were great role models for the younger players and showed them how Harvey Hockey is played,” Coach Plaskett said.

The coach said that the future also looks strong because Brian Alvarado, Justin Gelwicks, Stephen Nadler, and Justin Sirota will help “lead the way to many more exciting games and memories.”

The highlight of the season was against The Stanwich School, a team that had dominated Harvey over the years, but not this year. “We pulled together as a team and after battling back and forth with Stanwich we were able to break through in the third period for a 6-4 victory,” said Coach Plaskett.

Reflecting on the season, Coach Plaskett said, “Coach Delaney and I are so grateful for our players’ tireless contributions and so proud of them for a successful season.”

The No. 2 Bedford Ballerz took home the sixth grade A Super League Playoff title with a thrilling 46-44 triumph against the No. 1 East Coast Hawks in the title game Feb. 29 at the Brewster Sports Center.
