K-L Students Experience the Challenges of Disabilities on Differences Day
The annual program exposes children to the daily challenges students with special needs face.
Students at Lewisboro Elementary School experienced a day of celebration and understanding on Thursday at Differences Day. The event was organized by Katonah-Lewisboro Special Education PTA (SEPTA), a branch of the PTA that acts as a network and resource for parents of children with differences and disabilities.
Second and fifth graders rotated through a series of stations that each focused on specific disabilities. Volunteers guided the students through demonstrations, simulations and hands-on activities designed to help the children become aware of the differences of others and the technology that can be used to help them in schools and at home.
"It's something they are very likely to encounter within their years of schooling," explained Laurence Furic, a member of SEPTA. "Today's program helps them understand and be open to children having those difficulties."
Katonah Elementary students experienced the program on Friday. SEPTA has sponsored the program since its creation in 1999.
