Katonah Teen Plows a Mile of Road to Get Me Home
Katonah was quiet today, with the library and many shops closed. Mrs. Green's is open until 6:30 p.m.
Sometimes something happens that reminds me of what makes a small town a desirable place to live. Even when it's on a day that I reconsider enduring New York winters where my driveway will often be impassable, schools end up closed often enough that it's not a special treat, and we live in fear of the electricity being knocked out by accidents or fallen trees that take out power lines and might leave us freezing on a night we can't get the cars out of our driveway.
But anyway, here I am and this morning, out I went.
I made a treacherous trip to Katonah from Cross River, and witnessed several cars off the road, a truck stuck in a driveway, a car off the side of the side of the I-684 north onramp and saw ambulances and rescue trucks on I-684 south.
I made it back to Todd Road, and got stuck not able to make it up a hill covered with about four inches of messy, wet, grey snow. Then two teens in a Jeep with plow pulled up and said they would help get me home. I backed out of the way, and they proceeded to clear the road, not only on that hill, but the mile further to my house.
Thanks so much to Tyler Joseph and his co-pilot Nick Dyar—you made me feel like I can face this storm with people like you out there, willing to lend a hand to someone in need.
This also got me thinking about a volunteer snow plow brigade, organized something like a volunteer fire company. How cool would that be? I wonder if it could save towns money in the long run?
Seen around town today:
Noka Joe's has a sign up that says "Closed until Thursday." Perks closed at noon. Two drivers stopped to help a car off the on ramp to 684 North. Boo Girls has a sign up that says 50 percent off sale, but they are closed so I guess sale shopping will have to wait. The library is closed.
Mrs. Green's was open at 1 p.m. and planned on staying open until 6:30 regardless of weather.

It is so heartwarming to see that there are people out there that care!
