Kids Get Creative at KMA

Children created prints reminiscent of NYC Architecture yesterday at the Katonah Museum of Art.

With school out this week for the holidays, some local organizations are hosting events to keep kids engaged in enriching activities even when classes aren’t in session.

The Edcuation Department at Katonah Museum of Art has launched School’s Out/Art’s In, a week-long series of programs aimed to tap into kids’ creative energy.  Each day, a teaching artist leads children, helping them to complete a special art project.

Yesterday, children experimented with collagraph printing, first creating their own unique stamps and then using the stamp to transfer ink to paper.

Schaunel Steinnagel, a former Pound Ridge resident who now lives in the Philadelphia area, visited the museum with her three children while she was in town visiting family for the holidays.  She was especially pleased that despite the age difference between her children, all were able to enjoy themselves at the museum.

“This is great, all the kids are engaged, from the two-year-old to the ten-year-old,” she said.

Ayala Helft of New Rochelle arrived at the museum with her three children as well, whose ages ranged from three to nine years old.  She said she had never visited the museum before, but after seeing the event advertised online, she knew it’d be a fun time for the kids.

“Whenever the kids are on vacation we try to take them to do some interesting activities, but this is my first time ever here.”

Andrew Helft, 6, said his favorite part of the day was building the collagraph that would eventually stamp the ink onto the paper.

“It’s not that hard,” he said.

Events for School’s Out/Art’s In continue through the end of the week.

The KMA is a fabulous place to visit and learn! All of the exhibits are thought provoking, well curated and timely. There programs are also creative, fun and with real creative art elements.

Denise Leaden, who ran this particular workshop for the kids, is an amazing artist, crafts-person and wizard with children. Any time you see Denise Leaden involved in ANY event, you know it will be of quality and well executed. Bravo, Denise!
