Legion Commander Tapped for Vets Honors

Vietnam vet Guy Zinser, leader of the Katonah post for 10 years, nominated for hall of fame.

Guy E. Zinser, the commander of American Legion Post 1575 in Katonah for a decade, has been nominated for induction into New York’s 40th State Senate District Veterans’ Hall of Fame.

Zinser, who spent a year in Vietnam as a combat engineer with the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division, will join other veterans—one from each town, village and city in the 40th district—at a ceremony and reception Nov. 1 at the Peekskill Middle School.

Bedford Supervisor Lee V.A. Roberts called Zinser “an outstanding veteran of the Vietnam War and worthy of recognition not only for his service to this country but for his local leadership at the Legion. This nomination emanated from the membership itself and was endorsed by the Town Board.” Local governments nominate veterans for the hall of fame, which was created by state Sen. Greg Ball (R, C-Patterson) and which last year inducted 27 veterans in its first class of honorees.

Zinser’s name will be included with those of other veterans on a traveling wall that tours municipalities throughout the 40th district.

As a combat engineer working in demolitions, Zinser was a member of the 326th Engineer Battalion (Combat), a unit of the 101st Screaming Eagles, in the northern reaches of South Vietnam. For his service, Zinser received the Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal.

In his hometown, Zinser, 64, retired after 29 years with the Somers Highway Department. He has also served for 30 years as a volunteer with the Somers Fire Department, including two years as chief.
