Greenwich Orchids Opens in Bedford Hills
Meet the orchid-obsessed owner of Bedford Hills newest boutique.
A little over 30 years ago, Greenwich Orchids' owner Wendy Siegel received her first orchid.
“My late husband bought me my first orchid and I was so excited when I got it to re-flower. I started raising orchids in my basement until the basement was overcrowded with them,” said Siegel, who lives in Bedford.
Siegel and her husband then built greenhouses and became orchid suppliers for florist up and down the East coast. In 1981, the couple launched their first floral and home décor boutique, Greenwich Orchids in Greenwich, CT.
Now Siegel has opened a second location of her successful floral shop in Bedford Hills.
While the Greenwich location focuses on fresh flowers, the beautiful Bedford Hills location focuses on orchids—of course— but offers no other fresh flowers. Instead the emphasis of this new location is on unique furniture and home décor.
Patch sat down with Wendy Siegel to find out what we can expect from her boutique.
Patch: When did your Bedford Hills store open?
Wendy Siegel: We moved into Bedford Hills in September, but it took us a good month or so to get fully organized and decorated. We really just completed that.
Patch: Why Bedford Hills?
WS: It’s beautiful, and we have fabulous clients here. I’ve met the most wonderful people over here.
Patch: Tell us about what you're stocking in your boutique.
WS: We are focused on introducing new lines for the home: new gift items, fine furniture, and accessories – just unusual and fabulous things. Currently we have quite a bit out for Christmas.
Patch: What’s different about Greenwich Orchids than other home goods or flower shops?
WS: We are very, very eclectic. I have a fabulous time shopping for the inventory for the stores. Every time I go out shopping my goal is to find a new vendor. Find someone who is not represented locally.
Patch: Where do you get your items?
WS: I shop down in High Point, NC. I do the NY gift show and the Atlanta show. And I love to use local vendors. And I really really, love to find any vendor that is creating their inventory in the United States. We love American goods!
Patch: And you offer event decorating services?
WS: We do a lot of events. We do weddings and parties and things like that. Right now I am going into so many homes and designing for the holidays—both inside and out.
The nice thing is that people take a lot of inventory home try it and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. If it doesn’t work, they just bring it back. No charge.
Patch: Can you highlight some of your favorite items that our readers should come check out?
WS: We have an incredible collection of masks, awesome candles, great glassware and phenomenal pieces of furniture. I have an incredible sleigh bench that just came in— it looks so old and so beautiful and so well made.
We also have fabulous antler products: chandeliers, chairs, wine bottle holders and candlesticks. All harvested by the Boy Scouts and all naturally shed!
