Pour Wine Bar is Purely Italian

Small plates, big tastes are at this luxe lounge and wine bar.

"Buona sera, Signora!  Come va?"

These were the imaginary words I heard in my head as I stepped into Mt. Kisco's Pour Wine Bar last week, wishing desperately that I was entering an enoteca in Venice rather than a northern Westchester wine bar where English will most likely be the only audible language heard.

However, I was immediately approached by a handsome youngish man in a chic fedora and a large warm smile. Hmm… now this is feeling more like Italy. My greeter turned out to be Pour's proprietor, Anthony Colasacco. He put me at ease as he helped me pick out a large table for eight.

Pour is set in a restored turn-of-the-century house in downtown Mt. Kisco. The interior, however is far from Victorian. Dimly lit by candles, wonderfully-soft velvet seating in colored in rich hues. There are several small rooms which flow into each other.  Soft music plays in the background allowing conversation to come naturally without acoustic strain. The elegant wrap-around porch in the warmer months provides a refuge for patrons who enjoy a cigar or cigarette on their evening out.

We arrived around 8 p.m. on a hot Friday evening and there were already several tables occupied. By 10 p.m. every table was filled and many diners, or in this case "drinkers," were standing. Colasacco must be doing something right because there was never this much of a crowd here when it was Bolo Bar, for those of you who remember.

So, what about those wines?  I was impressed by the lengthy menu of the wines offered by the glass.  But the choices don't stop there. Pour will open any selection on their bottle menu as long as you agree to order 2 glasses from it. Easy to do when you have a group or a friend who shares your taste. My friendly waitress even poured me a taste before I commited to my choice. Nice touch – just like in Italy.

I tried their Domaine Pastou Sancerre, from France. It was an easy-drinking white with citrus and mineral flavors, even fine on it's own before I ordered food to accompany it. My favorite wine of the evening, though, was the bottle of  Ken Brown Pinot Noir, from the Santa Barbara wine area. Lush with a nice finish, we all enjoyed it so much a second bottle was poured.

Do as the Italians do, and don't savor your wine without food.  The offerings at Pour do not disappoint. You can create your own board of artisinal meats and cheeses, served with Sullivan Street Bread, from the interesting selections offered. Missing that wild boar sausage you tasted on a vacation in Tuscany? Now you know where to find it.

There are plenty of plates to taste and share as my group certainly did. Among them, our favorites were the Sicilian Meatball Sliders, the panino of Fontina, Carmelized Onions and White Truffle Oil Drizzle, and the special flatbread offering of Beets, Rocket and Goat Cheese. And if you have a sweet tooth, do no miss the Nutella Panino -- so rich and gooey -- the perfect thing to curb a late night chocolate craving.

The only item which was a miss for me was the Warm White Bean Dip. It wasn't necessarily unsavory, and it certainly was presented beautifully, but I would have enjoyed it more without the cheese blend included with the beans.

Pour certainly exudes the same vibe as many wine bars I have frequented in Europe – a friendly place to hang out casually with friends, enjoying good wines and good foods.  It's address may be Mt. Kisco but it's attitude is pure Italian.
