School Closed for Columbus Day: Take the Kids 'Back to the Future'

It's Columbus Day and local schools are closed. But there's plenty to do in town!

1. Katonah Thrift Shop book sale

Katonah Thrift Shop's annual book sale begins today at 10 a.m, and lasts through Saturday, Oct. 22. The sale features both adult and children's fiction and non-fiction in a wide variety of subjects. Included are beautiful coffee-table books, and self-help, cooking, health, travel, art, biographies and gardening books, as well as many hardcover and paperback fiction offerings, including some recent best-sellers. For children and teens, there will be a large selection of fiction and learning materials. Also included will be mixed media items such as games, puzzles, DVDs and CDs. Prices are modest, from $0.50 to a few dollars. Thrift shop hours are 10 to 4, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and 10 to 1, Saturday. The shop is closed Thursday and Sunday. The Katonah Thrift Shop is in the lower level of the Memorial House at 71 Bedford Road in Katonah.

2. Health film series begins tomorrow at Katonah Village Library

A series of documentary films focusing on health begins tomorrow night at the KVL. The series addresses issues of wellness and illness and begins with Food Matters, at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 11. The film features real stories of how natural food can reverse disease and maintain health.

3. Back in Time with Michael J. Fox

You might remember Biff Tannen and Marty McFly, but chances are your kids have no idea who you're talking about. Now's your chance to brief them in 1980s culture and see a great family movie together—Back to the Future is showing at Jacob Burns today at noon. for more information.

5. Columbus Day closures

The town of Bedford offices are closed today for Columbus Day, as are all state and federal government offices, including the post office. However, most retail shops and restaurants are open for business.
