Staycation Meets Shop-cation at Art on Fire, Grand Prix, & Janet’s Planet Art

When rotten weather abounds, boutiques and businesses offer creative activities and family fun for the indoors.

If Mother Nature cooperates when spring break rolls around on April 16, staycationing families should find it relatively simple to fill the week with relaxing outdoor activities, backyard barbeques, and daytrips.

If, however rotten weather impedes outdoor activities during the break, not to worry—your staycation can become a shop-cation when you take part in the creative activities offered by local busineses.

Art on Fire (Ridgefield), owner Joe Criscuuolo created his paint your own pottery, tiles, and flatware shop to inspire budding artists of every age.  Criscuuolo, who also teaches after school enrichment at the Ridgefield schools, invites children of all ages to come, pick up a paintbrush, and get real messy.

Customers may stop into the Art on Fire studio and create a painted masterpieces at the studio, or pick up a Pottery to Go kit and enjoy the creative process in the comfort of their own homes.

During spring break, Criscuuolo will extend his hours so that the studio will be open from 11:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. all week long.

Grand Prix New York (Mount Kisco), the self-proclaimed destination for “racertainment,” delivers on its claim.  Grand Prix customers get a vacation like entertainment experience every visit.  In addition to "Arrive & Drive" public go-kart racing for all ages, laser tag, an arcade, a bouncy house, and a restaurant, Grand Prix New York will offer Junior Racing School during spring break.

Drivers age 7 to 16 can participate in Junior Racing School, to be held April 23-24, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Janet’s Planet Art (Katonah) has been a Katonah fixture since 1991.  The art supply store is brimming with top quality art supplies, as well as fun, playful arts and crafts for kids of all ages and crafty adults.  Top sellers include hand-picked beads, wire art, Hot Loops, culturally diverse people kits, stamps, magnet art, and air dry clay.

Owner, artist, and teacher Janet Elman, who teaches after school art classes at Katonah, Bedford Hills, and Pound Ridge Elementary Schools, invites parents to come in any time –  but especially during spring break – and use her studio space to create a craft on premise.  Or grab a bunch of friends and schedule a class with Elman.
