Two Bedford Natives Charged in Separate Out-of-State Incidents

Ethan Weibman, formerly of Bedford, was charged with animal cruelty in Baltimore, MD, and Ellen Brewster, a current resident, faces a felony DWI charge in Bennington, VT. The following information does not indicate a conviction.

A former resident and a current resident of Bedford have been accused of crimes in other states.

Bedford native Ethan Weibman, 20, has been charged with animal cruelty resulting in death, mutilating an animal and animal cruelty, according to this story in The Baltimore Sun.

Weibman faces additional charges with additional criminal counts related to the beating of another cat. Court documents say Weibman is a suspect in the deaths of five more cats and kittens, writes Jill Rosen.

The story describes how Weibman allegedly adopted in March a short-haired cat named Lucy from the Maryland SPCA, then returned to the shelter two days later with a dead cat. He wanted to adopt another but his request was denied, according to the report.

Weibman was accused of animal cruelty after it was determined the cat died of extensive injuries resulting from a "blast wound to the chest that left her unable to breathe," and left bruises on her head.

Court documents describe a second incident in April when Weibman allegedly adopted a second cat from a PetSmart store, then brought the cat hours later to an animal hospital. The cat's injuries included broken teeth, a bloody nose, cuts, "facial swelling and hemorrhaging around the eye."

Weibman's parents, who live in Bedford, were advised by their attorney not to talk to the press, according to the story. Carol Weibman told the Baltimore Sun that, "It's hard, especially when you want to shout out your innocence to the world. I wish I could say more, but my lips, unfortunately, are sealed."

Weibman has been released on bail pending his next court appearance.

Weibman was previously arrested in Bedford in July 2010 for allegedly driving 91 miles per hour on I-684 and driving under the influence of drugs.

DWI charges in Vermont

In a separate incident, Ellen Brewster, 54, of Bedford, faces a felony DWI charge after Vermont State Police found her sleeping in her car on state Route 7, near Shaftsbury, VT. The incident occurred on July 31, according to this story in the Rutland Herald.

It's reported that Brewster pleaded innocent to the charges on Monday of this week.

The story describes how police found Brewster inside of her car, with the engine running and keys in the ignition. State Trooper Robert Zink said Brewster was confused about her whereabouts and thought she was in a different town.

The report said that Brewster was "previously convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in February 2003 in Kentucky and November 2000 in New York, according to court records."
