Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
Note: there will be construction at several points on I-684 between Exit 2 and the county line in the coming week, according to Hudson Valley Traveler.
Metro North is running a regular, weekday schedule for those who must work. For the fortunate ones who can go into the city for pleasure here's a list of subway stops that will get you to the Columbus Day Parade. Today, try the MTA's  webpage "The Weekender" which you can find starting Friday afternoons. It has details of weekend maintenance & construction work on the subways—on a handy interactive map. In local construction, the big action is in Putnam County on I-84. Starting Monday, it's down to one lane in both directions between I-684 and Route 121 in Southeast. Bridge repairs will go …
A Patch commenter on one of our stories on the environment mentioned one of the newest flashpoints in the culture wars—the conflict between drivers of cars and riders of bicycles. (And pedestrians are in there, too.) Several conservative politicians, including the mayor of Toronto, have dubbed the growth of bike lanes and pedestrian crossings "the war on cars." The Heritage Foundation wrote a paper on Washington’s War on Cars and the Suburbs: Secretary LaHood’s False Claims on Roads and Transit. "There is plenty of room for legitimate debate," countered Todd Litman in The First Casualty of a …
Three transportation items of note: Be alert the rest of this weekend: the New York State Police on Sunday and Monday will be working the final days of their Labor Day crack-down on drunk driving. Looking further ahead, remember to add some time to your commute Tuesday through Friday, as you adjust to school buses everywhere. Remember to stop for a stopped bus! The next Bike & Skate Sunday is coming up Sept. 11: the Bronx River Parkway will be closed to cars between the County Center and the Sprain Brook Parkway. Here are some road projects that may affect your drive in the coming week: …
For the next three weeks, the southbound Hutchinson River Parkway will be closed most nights between exit 15 and exit 7—for paving. Actual hours will be 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights from Aug. 23-Sept. 15. Detours will be posted, according to state Transportation Department officials. The work will stretch from Eastchester to Pelham. Exit 15 is the Cross County Parkway split and Exit 7 is the Boston Post Road. Everyone driving through the work zone while the parkway is open should be cautious.  That's not the only work on the Hutch that will snag drivers around the New …
Many sailors, kayakers and windsurfers have been worried about access to the Hudson River since the sewage leak in Ossining.  But there are other issues facing boaters. The website boatingonthehudson.com/   Warning: From Aug. 15-17, there will be two lanes closed on I-87 at Exit 7 in the Rivertowns during the repair of the Route 9A overpass. As for construction on local roads, the big issue should be on Route 22 from Aug. 17-31 in North White Plains. It'll be down to one lane each way, 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and that will mean huge delays, say officials from the state …
At the airport People who watch Westchester County Airport closely are on hyper-alert, between Jet Blue's decision to include a flight to the Bahamas in its Westchester offerings, and the airport's ongoing renovation plans. Airport watcher Marcia Teschner pointed out in the comments section of Harrison Patch's July 18 article on the current project—which she considers an expansion—that two additional urinals are being constructed at a cost of $500,000. And Rye Patch's Aug. 2 piece about the Bahamas flight brought three sharp comments from readers—and an elaboration from Jet Blue about their …
In its weekly magazine, AAA of New York poses but then punts on that classic question: are women better drivers? The snafu in Briarcliff Manor when state DOT workers shut down Route 9A for maintenance work on Wednesday made us wonder: The 287 project has been well publicized for years. Everyone knew or knew how to find out about what was happening and when.  But what about smaller projects such as the work on Route 9A? The state put an electronic sign at the north end of 9A for southbound commuters several days ahead of time, warning about delays. But as Geoff Thompson points out, his commute to his Briarcliff office doesn't include 9A southbound. People coming over local roads were just surprised....…
