The fire trucks are ready to roll into town from 20 other departments from Westchester County and Connecticut, joining the Bedford Village Fire Department for its annual parade and barbecue this Friday. Buffed fire engines, pumpers, tankers, rescue trucks, ambulances and chiefs' trucks will drive slowly along the parade route, joined by members of Bedford's 87-year-old department, local marching bands, color guards and other special guests. Where can a kid go to climb a truck that holds 150 gallons of fuel, 20,000 pounds of torque, has eighteen speeds, 600 horsepower and has traveled 30,000 miles? A church parking lot may not be your first guess, but as the site of the 5th Annual Truck Day sponsored by the Bedford Free Library, the area was wall-to-wall wheels, with oversized vehicles--big rigs, excavators, bulldozers and more--taking center stage. Bedford's David Herbst is a talented abstract expressionist painter who has studied at Cooper Union, NYU and Hunter College. He also received the first place prize at the Katonah Beaux Art Exhibition in 2009. He also happens to have multiple sclerosis. This life-altering disease forced his retirement from a career as high school art teacher in the New York City schools, when he was diagnosed with MS in 1988.  By 1992, he lost use of his left side, was confined to a wheelchair and had his speech greatly impaired.
