Updated: Fire Displaces 6, Damages Pizza Station in Katonah

A unidentified man one witness called "an angel" pounded on the apartment doors upstairs to evacuate sleeping residents.

Updated 4 p.m. Chief Schuberg reported that the fire was caused by a freezer unit in the kitchen and it was electrical in nature. Dajna Novakovic, whose family owns the Pizza Station business, said they hoped to re-open the restaurant but at this point were still assessing damage with insurance agents. Most of the blaze was contained to the restaurant space, however, the fire, smoke and electrical damage were considerable enough to displace the six residents living in the apartments above, according to Michael de Vulpillieres, media relations manager with the American Red Cross Greater New York.  The Red Cross provided the residents with emergency lodging, referrals for further housing needs and emergency financial assistance for clothing…

'Excited and Encouraged' Students Move Up From Elementary School

Fifth graders across two school districts yesterday participated in moving up day ceremonies. Here's a snapshot of one of them, at Bedford Hills Elementary School.

Songs, poems, and awards filled the Bedford Hills Elementary School auditorium  as 40 smiling fifth graders participated in their moving up ceremony.  "I'm excited for more opportunities," says Ellie Murphy, 11, of Bedford Hills,  referring to attending Fox Lane Middle School in the fall.  "It's a bigger campus, and we get to rotate classes," she said. The ceremony alternated between the students singing, and speeches or award presentations with the graduates playing a very big role in their special day. The students practiced their speeches and songs until they got them perfect, said Alesandra Gasper, 10, of Bedford.  A different student introduced every song or speaker, including the sentimental song, "For Good" from the broadway show, …

Karle: We are a Special Class, Taught at a Special School

Fox Lane Class of 2011 salutatorian Matt Karle's remarks from graduation ceremonies Thursday at Caramoor Center for the Arts.

When I first found out that I would have to give a speech at graduation, my first thought was no deodorant will be strong enough. I’m not known for my amazing public speaking skills. I think only Lizzy can decipher what I attempt to say. Nonetheless, this speech is supposed to be about some great advice or wisdom about how to live the rest of our lives. I am supposed to speak to my fellow classmates as if I have realized a greater truth through my four years in high school. Although I have learned an incredible amount about myself, life, and the world, I am still only 18. I do not know of any great truth about life, any more so then you guys probably do. I am sure that one day the meaning of life will come to me, but until then I am as …
