Harvey’s girls varsity basketball team opened up its season with an impressive 59-24 road win over Marvelwood Wednesday. The Lady Cavaliers dominated the game from the start and led 35-11 when the first half ended. The second half was more of the same as Harvey scored 24 points to the home team’s 13.
Senior Chinasa Nwokocha led Harvey with 15 points. Fellow senior Abby Hassett of Katonah had 13. Nwokocha and Hassett were named the game MVPs for their efforts.
Senior Gaby Paulhac of Waccabuc was tough for Harvey under the boards with 11 rebounds while sophomore Ariana Weaver had four steals.
Harvey Boys Lose in Overtime
The boys varsity basketball almost picked up a road win, but Harvey’s last second shot at the end of regulation time missed and the Cavaliers went on to lose in overtime to Marvelwood, 46-43.
It was a see-saw battle from beginning to end. At no point in the game did a team have a lead of more than 4. Harvey was up 3 at halftime and the teams went back and forth with a lead throughout the second half.
The Cavaliers had a chance to win the game at the buzzer but missed the shot. In the overtime period, Harvey’s hopes to pull out a win were dashed when Marvelwood made a 3-point shot with just 10 seconds left. Time ran out before Harvey had a chance to force double-overtime.
Harvey coach Mike Rubenfeld said his team played well. “We looked good as a team and are working hard. If we play like we did today and continue to work hard in practice, we should have a successful season.”
Senior Jesse Zubren of Pound Ridge led the way for Harvey with 11 points followed by sophomore Ricky Hicks with ten. Marvelwood’s Jacob Berg led all scorers with 15 points.
