has long been lauded for fostering creative and expository writing talent in its students, garnering a number of awards for its students, including multiple silver and gold keys, which are awarded by Scholastic in the late spring each year on a regional and national basis.
A group of middle school students, comprised of eight seventh and eighth graders, was selected to participate in the eleventh annual Poetry Live!, which took place at the Emelin Theater in Mamaroneck on Sunday, April 29.
The program, founded and produced by Mary Louise Cox, exists so that parents, grandparents, teachers, and lovers of poetry can gather to celebrate the U. S. National Poet Laureate program with young poets, and to encourage young writers to continue to write and enjoy poetry.
In the decade since its inception, more than 600 students have participated in the Westchester County program. Over 200 people attended the event in April and enjoyed hearing original poetry read by student poets from Fox Lane High School, Rye Neck Middle School, Mamaroneck High School, Hommocks Middle School, Westlake Junior High School, and Rippowam Cisqua School.
The Rippowam Cisqua middle school students were chosen to participate and present their original poems, which were also included in an anthology of the student writing distributed at the event.
The students who participated include:
- Evan Kieltyka, Katonah
- Haley Casper, Armonk
- Cian McGillicuddy, North Salem
- Jack Kilgallon, Bedford
- Alex Needham, Bedford
- Lindsay West, Bedford
- Christopher Stern, Bedford
- Henry Mockridge, all of Bedford
