The Tech Center’s Architectural Design & Modeling teacher Gerald Markel recently received the Centennial Medal from Philadelphia University for his role as a mentor and outstanding teacher.

Markel was nominated for the award by Brian Schwenk, a Tech Center graduate and Philadelphia University freshman who credited Markel with inspiring him to pursue a degree in construction management.

In his nominating letter, Schwenk praised Markel for providing “real world experience and insight in the field as he is a licensed, practicing architect. He also focused on and taught us the importance of green technology.”

As a result of the skills he learned in the Architectural Design & Modeling course, Schwenk said he was able to “land a paid internship at JMV Engineering in Manhattan as a draftsman.” He said Markel continued to be a mentor to him throughout the internship.

Schwenk said Markel challenged the class by assigning projects with specific objectives such as designing the most eco-friendly project or making the best use of space. “He also broadened our horizons by introducing us to other careers in the field and inviting guest speakers to our class to talk about what they do,” Schwenk said.

Philadelphia University presented the Centennial Educator Award to Markel at its opening day Convocation in August. Architectural Design & Modeling gives students a head start in the fields of architecture and engineering as well as an introduction to computer simulation, design visualization and animation. Students learn to use state-of-the-art software including AUTOCAD, REVIT, INVENTOR, and 3DS MAX.

The Tech Center at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES is one of many high-quality, cost-effective programs and services provided by BOCES to local school districts.

Other services include special education, professional development, curriculum and instruction, guidance and child study and management services.

Okay but let's focus on the charter of the BOE. The Board of Education believes its primaryRead More responsibility should focus on creating an educational environment that will help our students become knowledgeable individuals, problem-solvers, quality producers, effective communicators, wholesome individuals, collaborative workers, ethical individuals, life-long learners, and responsible, accepting and involved citizens. We remain committed to providing a high quality, well-balanced educational program that supports our faculty and staff and helps our students meet and exceed State standards as well as high district goals. It says nothing about protecting the investments of taxpayers by voting "no" on every expenditure. We need forward thinking, broad minded individuals to help guide educational direction of our schools. Keeping expenses reasonable and and in check should be a consideration by the educational focus should be primary. Although novices, Trustees Tobin and Schiff have helped true the course of the board back to the direction of education. Mr Stone who himself admitted he had never even been to a BOE meeting before deciding to run offers no sense of motivation other than Dr Treyz and his friends think he'll help shift the direction back toward finance. Mr Holbrook is no different a candidate than Mr Lipton himself was 6 years ago.
