Whirlwind Divers Defend USA Diving Junior Region 1 Title

It’s beginning to sound like a broken record...The New Canaan YMCA Whirlwind Diving Team once again bested the competition to win the USA Diving Summer Junior Region 1 Championship Meet.  The meet was held at The College of New Jersey on 6/6-6/8/14.  It was a close meet as Whirlwind finished the team competition with 195 points, just 5 points ahead of the second place team, High Dive Champions.  In total, 271 divers competed, representing 21 teams from Region 1 of the United States.  The top 15 finishers in each event now advance to the July Zone meet in Buffalo,NY, a qualifier for the USA Diving Summer National Championships.

Whirlwind had 22 JO divers who competed in this meet.  Highlight performances included Kevin Bradley’s (12-13 boys, Norwalk) 1st place finish on the 1M board and 2nd place finish on the 3M, and Rachel Burston and Kirsten Parkinson (16-18 girls, both of Stamford) who finished 1st and 2nd respectively on the 1M board and then flipped places on the 3M board, also taking the top two medals.  Other Zone qualifiers from Whirlwind include: August Hibler (11U boys, Pound Ridge), Claire Ross (12-13 girls, New Canaan), Lenny Hibler (12-13 boys, Pound Ridge), Allison Courtney (14-15 girls, Wilton), Timmy Luz, Owen Stevens, and Wiley Schmidt (14-15 boys, all from Darien), Jake Bowtell and Lee Christensen (both 16-18 boys, Darien), Cameron Rhind (16-18 boys, New Canaan), and Andrew Bologna (16-18 boys, Greenwich).

Whirlwind has had quite a successful season, winning the Spring Regional Meet, the YMCA National Meet, and now this Summer Regional Meet.  The divers continue to work hard at practice as they gear up for the culmination of their season at Zones and Nationals.
