South Salem Cemetery Could Be Added to State Historic Register

The South Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery is among 21 properties, resources and districts recommended for addition to the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

“Preserving these historic sites helps promote tourism, one of New York’s fastest growing industries, especially upstate,” Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said in a press release. “These sites represent notable parts of New York’s past and I encourage travelers to visit them and learn about our state’s great history.”

The South Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery burial yard contains 373 graves, the earliest of which is recorded as 1739, including two veterans of the French & Indian War, 26 local veterans of the American Revolution, and two veterans of the War of 1812.

Also recommended was The Manor Club, Pelham Manor – built in 1921-1922 to house a women’s social, literary, and philanthropic club, the Tudor Revival-style building became a social and cultural center for the whole community and provided women with leadership and educational opportunities.
