There’s a new medium in town and Jeffrey Terreson can’t wait to unveil it. Renowned for his interpretive paintings of horses and abstracts, Terreson now takes us on a ride to a new place of invention, innovation and experimentation.
The paintings in DEPARTURE, Terreson's third biennial solo show, feature textures and sub-textures that may appear chaotic and in every color of the rainbow, but are dominated by a singular chromaticity. Take a look closer at what appears to be a ribbon of color is, literally, just that. The surface has a flowing fabric feeling that makes the viewer want to touch it. But more importantly, the work takes the eye on an exciting visual journey through colors and shapes. This pioneering texturing produced by mixing encaustic wax and oils creates intricate patterns that reflect the artistic discipline and fine arts sensibility of Terreson’s work.
DEPARTURE includes “Winters Spring” (73’ x 144”), a triptych that brands the show with a colorful crescendo of medium that creates one- to two-inches of mesmerizing relief, demonstrating a maturity and dynamic use of texture. The technique flourishes in the freedom of discovery and represents Terreson’s organic progression as an artist.
“You don’t need a brush to be a fine artist,” Terreson said. “I’m trying to continually find new ways of painting, and because there’s no formula, it’s invigorating. This sense of freedom that allows me to grow.”

“I’m overwhelmed with excitement about this upcoming show,” he continued. “I don’t know how it will be accepted, but I’m taking a chance as a departure from my earlier work. And if you don’t take a chance, you never move forward.”
Born in Bronxville, New York in 1955, Terreson earned a four-year merit scholarship from Columbus College of Art and Design, where he received his BFA in 1976 at the top of his class. Supporting himself as a commercial illustrator, his art was purchased by such companies as ABC, NBC, Mobil, IBM, National Geographic and Purina.

Terreson eventually followed his passion to paint and continues to evolve as a fine artist. His paintings can be found in more than 150 private collections, including Ralph Lauren and Joseph Abboud.
