Contemporary Jewelry Shop Opens in Katonah

Bijou Jewelry celebrates its grand opening this Saturday at 5 p.m.

Casey Carter’s passion in jewelry design is remaking vintage pieces into new, modern creations.

“I love taking something old and giving it a fresh, new and young look,” said Carter, a Bedford native and 1998 Fox Lane graduate. With 13 years of experience in the jewelry business, he has long wanted to open his own store and has found a home at 135 Katonah Avenue in the space formerly occupied by Free & Co.

Carter said his aim with Bijou Jewelry—as he’s named the shop— is to create a modern approach to jewelry and offer fun, wearable pieces both for every day and special occasion in all price ranges.

Jewelry has been Carter’s passion since he was a child, he says.

“I had quite an extensive rock collection and I’ve always loved gems,” he said. He pursued that passion at the Gemological Institute of America in New York City, where he obtained a degree in jewelry design and wax carving.

For the uninitiated, all jewelry begins with wax carvings, Carter said, before it’s cast in metals. He creates original work in addition to refurbishing existing pieces. Bijou Jewelry will have some of Carter’s work for sale in addition to designers like Alexis Bittar and Gabriel & Co.  In addition, a private bridal room in the back of the shop offers a quiet area for engaged couples or brides-to-be to try on wedding and engagement rings.

The shop has a gallery-like feel, with spare white walls adorned with colorful modern art custom made for the store by local artist Mark Freedman.

Bijou Jewelry had a soft opening last week and will officially open with a grand celebration Saturday night from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.
