King Kone's Frozen Treats in Somers 'Makes Everyone Happy'

(This story, including its headline and photos, are by Plamena Pesheva)

Even on a hot summer day in Somers, when the line of people – eagerly awaiting their soft serve frozen treat – can stretch down the street, they're still happy and smiling when they get to counter.

That's what Deb Hopkins, owner of the area favorite King Kone, said. She and her husband Brian, Katonah residents, have owned the old-fashioned ice cream shop in Somers for the last 11 years.

"Ice cream makes everyone happy," Hopkins said. "There is something really special. It's not rocket science, it's ice cream. It should be fun."

The Hopkins have been in the ice cream business for the last 20 years and own 10 ice cream trucks, which are also available for parties and private events, around Westechster. They used to own a gourmet shop in Armonk for 15 years before buying King Kone.

Like so many other people in the area, they simply fell in love with King Kone and what it represents.

"It's one of those buildings when you see, you know it's an old fashioned ice cream place," Deb Hopkins said. "This place has been here for as long as I remember."

Hopkins, whose family is involved in the community, said everyone's lives are so busy and people are always in a hurry, but once they come to King Kone, they are able to "relax and chill out."

In addition to its famous soft-serve ice cream, King Kone customers can enjoy lobster rolls, fried clams, burgers, hot dogs and more.

"We haven't skimmed on quality," Hopkins said.

King Kone is located near the corner of Route 100 and Route 35. The parlor has colorful murals decorating the full exterior of the building. Customers can take their cones to go or enjoy their frozen snack at the outdoor picnic tables.
