Snipping Hair for a Half-Century

Camillo Astrologo was recently honored for his service to the Bedford community.

In 1961, John F. Kennedy became the 35th President of the United States, Alan Shepard became the first American man launched into space and The Parent Trap was one of the most popular films at the movies.

And, Camillo Astrologo started cutting hair.

The service and style offered by this Bedford barber are second only to his commitment to community, which Assemblyman Robert Castelli (R, C - Goldens Bridge) honored last Thursday with an official New York State Assembly Proclamation.

The Italian barber celebrated his 50th anniversary in business this year, said Castelli in a release.

Hair cut prices may have gone up—they averaged just $1 - $1.50 in the 1960s— but Astrologo's dedication to his craft hasn't changed over the last half-century, noted Castelli.

“For five decades, Camillo’s barber shop has provided the highest quality of services to residents throughout the region, and has been an important pillar of the Bedford community," said Castelli. "Camillo is the epitome of the Horatio Alger story, and has achieved the American dream through his hard work and dedication to his craft.”

Astrologo is also one of the youngest barbers in Italian history to receive his license, according to news reports.
