Assemblyman Buchwald Encourages Federal Lawmakers to Pass Commuter Tax-Break Extension

Assemblyman David Buchwald (D-Westchester) penned a letter to members of Congress who represent his district, urging them to extend a federal commuter tax break at its current level beyond its Jan. 1 expiration date. Senator Charles Schumer (D-New York) introduced a bill to the Senate in June and similar legislation has been introduced in the House.

“The potential reduction in the commuter pretax benefit would mean a greater financial burden for many hardworking New Yorkers,” Assemblyman Buchwald said. “It’s essential that this extension is passed to keep transportation to and from work affordable for families in our community.”

The commuter tax break, which currently allows commuters using mass transit to qualify for a pretax benefit of up to $245 per month, is a major savings for those who rely on the Metro-North to get to and from work. If legislation is not passed, the tax break reverts back to $125 per month in January.

In his letter, Buchwald addressed the hardship this would cause residents in the region. Commuters in Westchester County pay some of the highest taxes in the country and already spend thousands of dollars each year on mass-transit transportation costs.

Before his election to the State Assembly, Buchwald served as Chairman of the Metro-North Railroad Commuter Council, and in 2012 he joined with Senator Schumer in successfully advocating for an extension of the commuter tax benefit through the end of 2013. This year the hope is to make this tax cut permanent.

“We need to be doing everything we can to make sure commuters are not forced to bear an additional burden,” Assemblyman Buchwald said.
