Patch Picks: Teen Photography Contest; Free Jazz; Farmers Market

There is something for everyone to do this week in the Hudson Valley.

 If you're between 10 and 18, get your camera out and snap photos of what summer means to you. Two winners will receive prizes in age categories 10-13 and 14-18. One entry per person, but you can replace your entry at any time before the submission deadline. Send a JPEG of your picture to katref@wlsmail.org, with: your name; age; photo title; address and; telephone number. Submit a 4”x6” print and the library will post your photo in the Teen Time room. July 6. 6:30 p.m. Head to the Yonkers Downtown Waterfront at the Yonkers Amphitheatre for jazz and blues concerts from 6:30-8 p.m. This week catch The Johnny Hirsch Band on July 6. Hirsch is one of New York City’s most intriguing solo artists who leads his band as a singer/saxophonist fusing elements of rock, funk, jazz and skat singing. 71 Water Grant St., Yonkers.

Okay but let's focus on the charter of the BOE. The Board of Education believes its primaryRead More responsibility should focus on creating an educational environment that will help our students become knowledgeable individuals, problem-solvers, quality producers, effective communicators, wholesome individuals, collaborative workers, ethical individuals, life-long learners, and responsible, accepting and involved citizens. We remain committed to providing a high quality, well-balanced educational program that supports our faculty and staff and helps our students meet and exceed State standards as well as high district goals. It says nothing about protecting the investments of taxpayers by voting "no" on every expenditure. We need forward thinking, broad minded individuals to help guide educational direction of our schools. Keeping expenses reasonable and and in check should be a consideration by the educational focus should be primary. Although novices, Trustees Tobin and Schiff have helped true the course of the board back to the direction of education. Mr Stone who himself admitted he had never even been to a BOE meeting before deciding to run offers no sense of motivation other than Dr Treyz and his friends think he'll help shift the direction back toward finance. Mr Holbrook is no different a candidate than Mr Lipton himself was 6 years ago.
