Patch Picks: New City Fair; Brewster Film Festival; Miss Westchester & Miss Hudson Valley

There is something for everyone to do this week in the Hudson Valley.

.Sept. 1. 8 p.m. See Miss Hudson Valley and Miss Westchester get crowned in White Plains at the Performing Arts Center. Four winners get to compete in Miss New York USA and Miss New York Teen USA. Presented by New York Crown Productions. , 11 City Pl, White Plains.

.Sept. 1. 10 a.m. Head to Philipsburg Manor at 381 North Broadway (Route 9) in Sleepy Hollow throughout Labor Day weekend and learn the history of the Native American residents of the area. Folk tales, song, and storytelling, and a participatory presentation of traditional Native American dance, plus open-hearth cooking demonstrations, games, live music, and hands-on craft activities for children. Demonstrations of Native American trades and crafts also scheduled. $14; $12 for seniors; $8 for children 3-17. Free for members and children under 3. .Sept. 5. 7:30 p.m. Hear tales of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" Headless Horseman as told by Jonathan Kruk at the Ferry Sloops monthly meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m., in the Croton Point Park Nature Center. Pick up a copy of Kruk's History Press book, "Legends and Lore of Sleepy Hollow," after the potluck., 14 Croton Point Ave, Croton on Hudson.

. Sept. 1. 2 p.m. Peekskill Be First Boxing presents an afternoon of boxing featuring area boxers. ,

. Sept. 8. Noon. Arts organization 12milesnorth presents the Take Me To The River Grassroots Music & Arts Festival in Hastings-on-Hudson’s Draper Park. Enjoy folk, jazz, world, bluegrass, alternative and rock music. Art activities and installations and food vendors also on hand. Also check out the "green" expo. Purchase advance tickets at www.12milesnorth.org for $15. Tickets at the gate are $20. Kids 10 –17 are $5. Kids under 9 are free. .Sept. 1. 4 p.m. Head to Brewster for a film festival that kicks off with food vendors at 4 p.m. and includes music, art and entertainment for children at the Walter Brewster House lawn. Short films screen under the night sky. Free. , 3 Oak St, Brewster.

Sept. 2. 10 a.m. Head to South Main Street in New City for a fair gathering local food, rides, entertainment and shopping. Free. S. Main St & Congers Rd, New City.

Okay but let's focus on the charter of the BOE. The Board of Education believes its primaryRead More responsibility should focus on creating an educational environment that will help our students become knowledgeable individuals, problem-solvers, quality producers, effective communicators, wholesome individuals, collaborative workers, ethical individuals, life-long learners, and responsible, accepting and involved citizens. We remain committed to providing a high quality, well-balanced educational program that supports our faculty and staff and helps our students meet and exceed State standards as well as high district goals. It says nothing about protecting the investments of taxpayers by voting "no" on every expenditure. We need forward thinking, broad minded individuals to help guide educational direction of our schools. Keeping expenses reasonable and and in check should be a consideration by the educational focus should be primary. Although novices, Trustees Tobin and Schiff have helped true the course of the board back to the direction of education. Mr Stone who himself admitted he had never even been to a BOE meeting before deciding to run offers no sense of motivation other than Dr Treyz and his friends think he'll help shift the direction back toward finance. Mr Holbrook is no different a candidate than Mr Lipton himself was 6 years ago.
