Reader's Choice: Where to Practice Martial Arts?

This week, we want to know where you or your children train in martial arts.

“The primary purpose and philosophy of Soo Bahk Do is the rejuvenation and the prolonging of life beyond the normal span.”

Patch blogger and owner of Martial Arts of Westchester Peter Murray wrote the above quote in . The quote shows that martial arts like Soo Bahk Do are about more than just physical conditioning. Martial arts training offers great benefits for students’ physical health, but also helps with mental and spiritual development.

The term, martial arts, is derived from Latin, meaning “Arts of Mars,” the Roman god of war. With roots in ancient combat, martial arts requires students to sharpen their minds. A lot of the training is about how to predict or react to an opponent’s move and assess his or her weaknesses to use them to one’s own advantage.

Anyone who has tried a good martial arts class would have learned this from the start. So, have you or your child tried out a local school or class you like?

What is your favorite place for martial arts?

Sensei Marti and his dojo are exceptional. Truly family oriented and a community of caring people who share values of discipline and honor. I can think of no better place to help support me in raising a caring strong young person and citizen. Worth the investment.

Westchester Mixed Martial Arts has to be the best school in westchester. Besides the fact that the staff at WMMA is phenomenal, the various disciplines being practiced are all superior to any local schools limited curriculum. Everyone gets involved with martial arts for different reasons and everyone defines success in his or her own way. Having said this, Westchester Mixed Martial Arts is vastly superior to any area martial arts school. And that's not jab at any local schools. WMMA instructors will tap your full potiential as a martial artist, whatever that potiential may be!

As a student of martial arts, words cannot express all that I have learned at Marti Martial Arts Academy. Sensei Marti has watched me grow both physically and mentally from a scrawny, self-conscious child a strong, confident young woman. Besides learning how to defend myself against any attacker, I have learned very valuable life lessons. The fruits of karate, such as discipline, self-control, decision-making, and maturity, have been instilled and cultivated in me. Martial Arts has influenced almost ever aspect in my life, ranging from my relationships to my high school studies. I consider myself very blessed to be apart of such a fantastic dojo and strongly suggest everyone to consider joining.

I have been a student at Marti Martial Arts Academy for over 2 years now and it has been the most enjoyable length of Martial Arts practice I have obtained. Opposed to other Dojo's where I've studied, Marti Martial Arts Academy has not only taken my physical skills to new heights, it has enabled my character to reach those heights just the same. Sensei Jose Marti is one of the admirable role model's I could ever have, needless to say a fantastic Martial Artist. The values, morals and principles I have learned here, and continuously practice, are priceless and seem to be limitless. Every individual joins Martial Arts for a different purpose, sometimes simply generic ascending to however complex, yet each individual at Marti Martial Arts I have had the pleasure of training with, spoke of acquiring their goals and more.

Mark Abrams, Sensei is an outstanding instructor. I came to the dojo with 20 years experience in another style and felt like a beginner again. Abrams sensei teaches the principles that make the techniques work. I highly recommend him, and the dojo to anyone. There are many martial arts schools out there but there are few of this quality. Don't take my word for it, come and see for yourself.
