RFK Jr. Puts Former Family Home on Market

Robert F. Kennedy is selling the home where Mary Kennedy hanged herself in May 2012. Ginnel Real Estate has the $4 million listing.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is selling the home where he lived with his former wife, Mary Kennedy, and their four children, the New York Daily News reports.

The 10,000 square-foot home was built in 2008 and opened to the public as a showcase of "green design" in April 2010. Mary Kennedy was an architect and responsible for the energy efficient features of the home, which included solar panels, geo-thermal heating and fiber optic lighting.

Robert Kennedy, Jr., filed for divorce one month after the house tour; two years later, Mary Kennedy committed suicide in a barn behind the main home.

Muffin Dowdle of Ginnel Real Estate is the listing agent for the home, which includes an entrance hall, formal dining room with fireplace, living room with fireplace, a terrace, library with a fireplace, a master suite with a fireplace and six additional bedroom suites, according to the listing.

Also included in the home, which sits on over 10 acres, is a recreation room witha kitchenette, an elevator, sauna and swimming pool.

Salvaged and recyled materials are featured throughout the home, said Robert F. Kennedy in 2010, a kitchen countertop, wood floors and marble used in the bathrooms.

Tough sell. How could anyone be comfortable buying a home that saw so much pain? Not just Mary's death, but before, those walls housed two very unhappy people. You couldn't give it to me for $1.00. I don't even think it's pretty - such a stark exterior.

I hear you. It's also possible a another family may bring new life there, creating happiness, memories and new traditions in the house—making it a home again.

Excellent point Lisa. I hope you are right. But it would have to be one incredibly strong family. I couldn't do it, no matter what memories or happiness I may think I could bring. I feel I would be traipsing on the very place where Mary wouldn't take it anymore. The choice she made to take her life at the very home she designed, a home she put so much love into, speaks volumes. It would spook me to be there. I would be happy to be wrong on this and wish the broker well.

How is a 10,000 square foot home built for five people considered an environmentally friendly home? This reminds me of the Al Gore concert for the environment where all the performers traveled on their private jets. Are liberal Democrats exempt from practicing what they preach?
