Tornado Warning In Effect Until Noon

Westchester and Rockland Counties may be affected.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Westchester and Rockland Counties until noon.

Gene Casey September 8, 2012 at 04:28 pm
Sorry, but I would be more worried about a tornado than grammar. That's just me however. So thanks for the warming, no matter how you say it! Sincerely, Gene Casey

Relax Dan and teevoz......affected...effected....the main issue is the idea there is a tornado watch or threat for our area.....that's what should be troubling you..not proper use of grammar at this point....just sayin'.
Sydney Smith September 8, 2012 at 04:37 pm
Rina,
That's not the point. If your suppose to be a professional, get it right or stay home.
mike September 8, 2012 at 04:40 pm
You're all kidding, right? How about focusing on the threat and potential emergency, just saying...
Laurence Voss September 8, 2012 at 04:41 pm
Not much happening this morning I see. People more concerned about The Elements of Style than paying a visit to the Wizard of Oz.
Angel125 September 8, 2012 at 04:51 pm
There always has to be some who have to badmouth everything!!! ........ thanks for the tornado watch.
teevoz September 8, 2012 at 05:16 pm
Yes, certainly, thanks for the information. And getting it out quickly provides an important service. Of course.
But I'm sorry - Patch wants to be seen as professional journalism, and there are often spelling and grammatical errors here that shouldn't happen, in articles and columns for which there was plenty of time for copyediting. There's no reason to have lower standards online than in any newspaper, and if they want to be taken seriously they should get that piece of the journalistic process in order. Perhaps this article wasn't the best place to bring this up, because it is breaking news and all of that, but overall I think it's something that Patch needs to fix. And I'd make the same type of comment if The New York Times had the same kind of error.
Wendy September 8, 2012 at 05:21 pm
Soooo, anyone seen anything concerning in the local skies yet?
Helen September 8, 2012 at 05:23 pm
Great response, humorous and appropriate!
Alan Englander September 8, 2012 at 05:23 pm
The current National Weather Service Tornado Watch now runs until 9:00 PM for our entire region.

You're. That is all
Wendy Kelly September 8, 2012 at 05:48 pm
Teevoz you can't be serious worrying about a typo during a potential tornado. I think Patch.com is a wonderful online news source. I agree with other I rather be prepared and have a few spelling errors. Thanks Patch!

<The counties were "effected" when they were created> Snort. The author's use was correct. Perhaps you were just trying to be funny?
Mike September 8, 2012 at 05:50 pm
OMM soccer (rockland) very quickly cleared the complex when warning first came across. They did a good job! All games cancelled now. Stay alert and safe.
Joseph Kuhl September 8, 2012 at 05:55 pm
Oh btw - "The counties were "effected" when they were created.". What is the antecedent of 'they' above? Counties? That makes a lot of sense ... When were the counties created? Sometime in the 1800's, I think.

This thread is hysterical.

ALL YOU PEOPLE WORRIED ABOUT THE GRAMMER ARE IDIOTS, WORRY ABOUT THE THREATS OF THE TORNADOS
John Taggart September 8, 2012 at 06:23 pm

Welcome to a little bit of Texas weather. I never experienced this kind of weather when I lived on Verplanck Point. Never had to worry till I moved to Texas almost 50 years ago.
Karen September 8, 2012 at 06:31 pm
I notice mistakes all the time but ignore them especially when I really need to know about a warning like this. The grammar doesn't seem too important. On the other hand, as a teacher, if I were to make these kinds of mistakes when writing to parents, I probably wouldn't have a job. So, it does make you wonder. I see these kinds of mistakes very often in news articles.
teevoz September 8, 2012 at 06:35 pm
Wendy, I'm not now, nor was I earlier, "worried" about the error. I was merely pointing out that copyediting ought to be a higher priority at Patch across the board. And I'd add that there are plenty of competent high school students, recent college grads, aspiring journalists, literate at-home moms, unable to find work who'd love a shot at this. Why not hire a few of them - or bring them on as unpaid interns - as copyeditors and improve the quality of the presentation?
I already said that this particular breaking-news article might not have been the best place to raise this, but it's really no excuse for sloppy, or nonexistent, editing.
teevoz September 8, 2012 at 06:36 pm
Thanks. I can actually think about more than one thing at a time.
teevoz September 8, 2012 at 06:51 pm
Yes, it's not that it's so important - my initial comment was just an agreement to the first person who raised it, since I noticed it too. The roaring crowd here made it a bigger deal than was necessary. But I see the error has been corrected in the header I'm looking at, so that's a good sign.
I was not trying to gang up on the writer who is, I'm sure, working hard and just missed it, but I think when a news agency is putting something out there as in effect a newspaper article, not as a blogpost or a Facebook comment, they should give their writers some backup so these kinds of embarrassing errors can be avoided. It's hard enough to be taken seriously as a professional publication - Patch should have higher standards, and provide support to the writers to achieve them.

Thanks for the feedback. Our weekend editor is a staff of 1, and our weekday editor is also a staff of 1, no copy editors at Patch. We try to proof but often, tired eyes make mistakes.
Dan Seidel September 8, 2012 at 08:29 pm
OK people: my empty chair is tied down now. I am aware of the affect to come :>). This is passed from generation to generation - you know when your kids say: "me and him, we went to..." and one does an immediate correction: "JoeBlow and I went...."? every time? no matter where? Improper diction/bad grammar is like someone taking their nails to a blackboard - scraaaaatttccchhhhh!
Anyway, watching the Doppler is fun! get ready! Theirs going to be some wicked weather (see? theirs/there's....I had a sec'y who could never get that straight - drove me nuts!) Tornado touch down in Breezy Point. Surf Club got hit. PS: even Howard Stern got messed up on AGT and Nick Cannon, who Stern corrected for saying "America have voted" in the past, got Stern back for the bad grammar exhibited. It's just a parent thing. Helps us for the next time.
Jaques Strape September 8, 2012 at 08:52 pm
Just as long as their isn't a tornado watch in they're neck of the woods, then there will be safe. Your better off looking at the wether report on you're own....
Esmerelda Vamenoose September 8, 2012 at 10:11 pm
"Try" to proof? Isn't the point of an editor (even when the editor is a "staff of 1") to, um, edit? I totally agree with Teevoz! It makes it hard to take Patch seriously, even when you are discussing serious news, when there are amateur mistakes like this. She is right, it happens all the time on Patch -- clean up your staffs of 1!
John Taggart September 8, 2012 at 10:26 pm
Forget these people with nothing to do but criticize Lisa. The Patch is a good out fit and all these anal perfectionists are here reading, non of them could do any better. Armchair quarterback is the term.
NorthCountyHound September 10, 2012 at 12:53 pm
There was no Tornado in Yorktown afterall after all, only bad grammar.
