Grand Opening of Gleason’s in Peekskill

When/Where:  Friday, August 31, 6 p.m. at 911 South Street in Peekskill

Why Go: Check out Gleason’s, the newest addition to the Peekskill dining scene as it holds its grand opening this Friday. The restaurant and bar has been renovated by the owners of the Birdsall House.

They plan to focus on beer, meat and will use local ingredients, as they do at the 2-year-old Birdsall. The location, which formerly housed Ciro’s Italian restaurant, is two blocks from John Sharp and Tim Reinke’s Birdsall House, a popular restaurant and bar on Main Street.

A Cat in Paris

Where/When: on Friday, Sept. 1 through Sept. 3 at 12 p.m. (also showing Sept. 8-9, 15-16, 22-23, and 30 at 12 p.m.)

Why go: Check out this Oscar-nominated animated film with the whole family over the weekend. Part of JBFC's "Movies for Kids and Their Families" series, the 65-minute G-rated film follows the life of a cat named Dino, who leads a double life.

Green Corn Festival

When/Where:  Saturday, September 1, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at

Why Go:  The Green Corn Festival explores the history and culture of the area’s Native American residents. Enjoy folk tales, song, and storytelling, and a participatory presentation of traditional Native American dance, plus open-hearth cooking demonstrations, games, live music, and hands-on craft activities for children. Susan McLellan Plaisted will demonstrate Native American cooking and medicine-making. Arthur Kermss returns with demonstrations of wampum-making and treenware (wooden bowls and utensils). Geordanes of Irvington will provide picnic food.

Price: Admission: $14; $12 for seniors; $8 for children 3-17. Free for members and children under 3

Rumble on the River

When/Where:  Saturday, September 1, 2-6 p.m. at , 50 Hudson Ave, Peekskill

Why Go:  Peekskill Be First Boxing, a not-for-profit organization presents a fun-filled evening of boxing, entertainment, music, and food, featuring a wide range of boxing clubs.

Price: $15.00 (Adults 18 & Over), $10 Contribution (Children 17 & Under), $10 Contribution (USA Boxing Passbook Holders)

Lobsters: More than Just Dinner

When/Where:  Sunday, September 2, 1:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. at the in Greenwich.

Why Go:  Join local lobstermen and naturalists, who will address questions surrounding the status of lobster fisheries and populations in Long Island Sound. This family-friendly event features live lobsters in a touch tank, a fun craft, and continuous video footage of this complex crustacean.

Price:  The program is free, but passes are required for park entry.

New York Bacon Fest 2012 in Hudson

When/Where:  Sunday, September 2, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Henry Hudson Waterfront Park, Water Street in Hudson, NY—a 90 minute drive up the Taconic parkway.

Why Go: From the Bacon Fest website: “Hey, why ISN’T there an entire festival around bacon anyways?” Bacon Fest became the premiere event produced by Live Local, Inc., a company headquartered in upstate NY dedicated to supporting local flavor, local charities and local economies. In an effort to share bacon, live music and all that is good and right about small town America in the summertime, Bacon Fest became the most beautiful idea ever inspired by meat.

Restaurants and eateries from NYC, the Hudson Valley, the Capital Region and Southern Adirondacks and into the Berkshires will be featuring their bacon creations, area smokehouses will have a spectrum of flavors to sample, artisans of all crafts – edible and non – will have their wares on display, farms and CSA’s will delight us with pig knowledge.

Price:  Daily Gate Admission is $10.00 or $8.00 in advance. No discounted or reduced price tickets will be available at the gate. Children 10 and under are free. Rain or shine.

Brewster Film Festival and Food Fest

When/Where:   Saturday, September 1, 4 p.m. at in Brewster. Food Fest begins at 4:00. Food Vendors will be on Oak Street selling dinner items until 7 p.m.

Why Go: Take in music, check out artisans and entertainment for children on the lawn of the historic Walter Brewster House. Tours of the Walter Brewster House will be available throughout the day. Short films will be shown under the stars on the sweeping lawn of the Walter Brewster House.

Price:  Bring blankets or lawn chairs for this free event.

Where/When:  on Monday, Sept. 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Why go: Dozens of antiques dealers will have antiques and collectibles on display. The Friends of Lasdon will also be holding a plant sale and Gary Dillon will be holding a signing. Food will be available for purchase. Bring items for appraisal between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. ($5 each).

Pricing: $7; free for children under 12

Second Annual Church Tavern Biathlon

Where/When: Spring Street, South Salem, Monday Sept. 3, 9 a.m.

Why go: Take part in a great community athletic event. The majority of the funds generated from the race will go to charities like The Carpenter's Kids Program, Community Center of Northern Westchester, and The Wounded Warrior Project.  Last year, the organizers donated approximately $400, $500 and $600 dollars to the above charities. Also - winners receive pewter tankards and all particapants receive medals and can stick around for the free BBQ, live music from Quadrasaurus.
