Cheryl Wheeler

Cheryl Wheeler is an unforgettable experience. She’s the singer/songwriter of some of the prettiest, most alluring and intelligent ballads of love and loss on the modern folk scene and she’s a savagely funny social critic.  Cheryl swings from singing deceptively plain-spun songs to Groucho Marx-in-a-housecoat humor.  The result is a delightful contrast between musician and comic, poet and self-deprecating comedienne.

Tickets are $ 25 in advance, $30 at the door, and are available online at http://voicescafe.org/buy-tickets/.  Doors open at 7:30.

One really has to see Cheryl in person in order to appreciate her unique combination of stand-up comedy and heart-wrenching beautiful ballads sung with an incredible voice and outstanding musicianship.  And, almost half of her songs are only performed in concert.

The Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas has a legacy of racism, anti-Semitism, and homophobia, including the picketing of funerals of fallen homosexual soldiers.  They made the mistake of picketing a Lady Gaga Concert.  Leave it to Cheryl to write “Lady Gaga's Singing Program” from the standpoint of the Westboro Baptist Church!

Opening for Cheryl will be Suzanne Sheridan, a singer-songwriter in her own right since her high school years. Her song, “The Power’s In You” (also recorded by the Unitarian folk-gospel group Exit 43), received a John Lennon Songwriting award. She is currently on tour with her Joni Mitchell/Leonard Cohen tribute concert in support of the ACLU’S campaign for MARRIAGE EQUALITY IN ALL 50 STATES. She just released her CD, “Standing Ovation,” which is 20 of her original songs including the cult country hit “90 Pound Suburban Housewife Driving in Her SUV."
