Bedford Chamber Concerts presents guest pianist Mei-Ting Sun and renowned keyboardist and Bedford Chamber Concerts Music Director, Anthony Newman in an exciting double piano program of Bach, Debussy, Brahms, and Ravel on Wednesday, March 13, 2013.
The New York Times calls Mr. Sun “Stunningly fluid”, The Boston Globe calls him “A miracle of lightness, speed, and precision of articulation and pianistic shimmer.” Mr. Sun began his life on the concert stage at the prestigious Spring of Shanghai Festival in 1986 at the age of 5. He has collaborated with many major orchestras and performed at premier concert halls in 19 countries through 5 continents. Mr. Sun has won numerous prestigious awards including the 7th National Chopin Piano Competition and the first Minnesota International Piano-e-Competition.
About Anthony Newman, The Washington Post says "Newman is one of the great keyboard players of our time.” The New York Times says "Newman's flair for the theatrical and propulsive is always exciting. His ornamentation is completely fluid and unmannered.”
The program will include Bach’s Double Concerto in C for two keyboards, selections by Debussy, Brahms 4 Piano Pieces, Op 119, and an arrangement of Ravel’s “La Valse.” The Concerto in C is thought to be one of Bach’s earliest concertos written expressly for keyboard instruments. Brahms Op 119, one of his final compositions, offers a more reflective tone than his early works.
The works by the two French “Impressionist” composers, Debussy and Ravel, present a quite different approach to music, with a stronger emphasis on color. “La Valse,” Ravel’s popular orchestral evocation of the declining 19th century, has been transcribed for two pianos by Mr. Sun.
