Weekend Planner: Hawkwatch, Concert, Summer on the Farm

A round up of interesting events for your weekend ahead.

Where/When: Westmoreland Sanctuary, for repeating dates.

Why go: It's science in action! Aug. 15 marks the start of Bedford Audubon's annual Hawkwatch, now in its third decade. The hawkwatch platform, located at The Nature Conservancy’s Arthur Butler Sanctuary, is open to the public and will be monitored daily from 9am to 5pm until December 1, weather permitting. o watch a Patch video on what it's like on the platform, which requires a moderately strenuous climb. Call for directions.

 Where/When: Teatown, 1600 Spring Valley Road, Ossining. 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18

Why go: Did you know that crows are so intelligent that some refer to them as “flying monkeys?”  Come learn what makes these feathered bird brains tick by making crow enrichment toys with us. We’ll then take our creative inventions to their enclosure and watch how the crows interact with them. Call 914-762-2912 x110 to make a reservation.

Walk Sleepy Hollow 'Park to Park' 

Where/When: The Sleepy Hollow riverfront from Horan's Landing to Kingsland Point Park will be open again on Sunday, August 19 to walkers, bikers and rollerbladers from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Lighthouse tours from 1 to 3 p.m. 

Why Go:
Until the now-empty GM lot gets developed, this long stretch of vital riverfront property remains largely inaccessible to the public. The Village has designated three days this summer when our riverfront would open at last, including the historic lighthouse. If you were disappointed by the closed lighthouse last time, there will be a tour this Sunday as planned.

When/Where: 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 1829 Maple Street, Peekskill

Why Go: Two Peekskill sisters and their friend, who lost her sister suddenly last year, are hosting this event to raise money for a scholarship fund created in honor of the sister and another friend who was lost tragically. The scholarship helps pay for college for students who have faced and overcome adversity. The event will include an open mic, live music, sno cones, a bouncy castle, cotton candy and more.

Summer on the Farm Weekend at Stone Barns


Where/When:
  on 630 Bedford Road in Pocantico Hills on Saturday and Sunday, August 18 and 19, 2012, from 10 am – 4 pm. To register and read more about the special programs this weekend click here.

Why Go: Come explore the farm at the height of the summer bounty. Pick up a scavenger hunt sheet at the Farm Store and head off on your own, or sign up for one of the programs ranging from the A-Bee-C's of Bees to a Wild Food and Ecology Tour with “Wildman” Steve Brill.

Price: Depends on the program and age; scavenger hunt and tasting table is free. $5, $10, $20, or $25, for other events. There is a $5 parking fee to park at the farm; free parking for members.

 

Summer Waterfront Concert

Where/When:  on Friday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m.

Why go: Ossining's weekly summer concert series continues this week with Powderfinger. In addition to live music, enjoy the park's great views and pick up some fresh food. This event is weather-permitting.
