Tip #8--Guidelines in Choosing the Right Summer Opportunities for your Child

Top 10 topics to discuss when choosing the right summer opportunity for your child continues with tip# 7 (accreditation)

Choosing the right summer opportunity for your child is a process.  When you meet with camp directors you are prepared to talk about program & facility but how do you talk about industry standards?  For example, NYC restaurants are proudly displaying their Department of Health Grade, and the beautician at the salon hangs their certificate; they do these things so consumers can see that they meet the industry standards.  Do you know what the standards are for the camping industry?

Topic Tip #8

Accreditation- Find out if the program follows a nationally known accreditation process.  Ask for those standards to be outlined.  Find out if their camp program is inspected each summer by the Department of Health. Understand what it means to be Accredited by the American Camp Association (The "ACA" is the only national organization which establishes uniform standards for reviewing camps) and ask if the program has chosen to participate.

Okay but let's focus on the charter of the BOE. The Board of Education believes its primaryRead More responsibility should focus on creating an educational environment that will help our students become knowledgeable individuals, problem-solvers, quality producers, effective communicators, wholesome individuals, collaborative workers, ethical individuals, life-long learners, and responsible, accepting and involved citizens. We remain committed to providing a high quality, well-balanced educational program that supports our faculty and staff and helps our students meet and exceed State standards as well as high district goals. It says nothing about protecting the investments of taxpayers by voting "no" on every expenditure. We need forward thinking, broad minded individuals to help guide educational direction of our schools. Keeping expenses reasonable and and in check should be a consideration by the educational focus should be primary. Although novices, Trustees Tobin and Schiff have helped true the course of the board back to the direction of education. Mr Stone who himself admitted he had never even been to a BOE meeting before deciding to run offers no sense of motivation other than Dr Treyz and his friends think he'll help shift the direction back toward finance. Mr Holbrook is no different a candidate than Mr Lipton himself was 6 years ago.
