Writers' Center Opens Reading Room for Morning Commuters and Debuts Open-Mic Night for Teens

In celebration of its twenty-fifth anniversary, the Hudson Valley Writers' Center is opening up a "Rush-Hours Reading Room," from 6 to 9 a.m., beginning on September 9 and ending on October 3, 2013. The Hudson Valley Writers' Center is headquartered in the restored Philipse Manor train station in Sleepy Hollow.

"Rush-hour commuters and neighbors are welcome to stop by, learn about the center, read literature, charge their phones, have coffee or just enjoy the view," HVWC executive director Jo Ann Clark said.

Information about classes and workshops for aspiring and professional writers will be available for distribution. Registration is still open for 50 classes and workshops that begin on September 10 or later that week.

HVWC also plans to introduce "TeenSpace" which Clark described as "an open-mic program for participation by teenagers in a supportive evening of spoken word and musical performance that showcases their creativity.”

Evening programs

The nighttime activities now include:

  •  Friday-night Open-Mic. On the third Friday of every month, poets, essayists, and fiction writers share work in progress; musicians and vocalists perform. Cookies and coffee are served. Doors open at 7 p.m. Starting time is 7:30 p.m. ($3 donation)
  • The new TeenSpace Open-Mic. Beginning on October 19, HVWC will turn its space over to teens once a month on a Saturday night for an open-mic evening of their own. TeenSpace begins at 7 p.m.
  • Sunday-afternoon literary events. On a typical Sunday, authors read from newly published work. The starting time is 4:30 p.m. ($5 donation)
  • Other Saturday events. The next special event will be "Music and Words: a Concert and Reading with Paul Allen" on September 21, 2013. Allen has performed at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. He is a Professor Emeritus at the College of Charleston. He retired in 2010 after 36 years of teaching poetry writing and writing song lyrics. Starting time is 7:30 p.m. ($5 donation)
“We’re proud to have won a ‘best cheap-date’ award because it’s important to us that our quality programming is also affordable," the executive director said.
