Art as a Tool for Learning: The Katonah Museum of Art and Park Early Childhood Center in Ossining

On May 13, families gathered at Park Early Childhood Center in Ossining for an art exhibition that was the culmination of a 9-session program that brought together Katonah Museum of Art educators with the First Steps program at Park. The program, called Arte Juntos (Art Together) involved at-risk 3-year old children (a majority of whom are English language learners) with their parents in using art as a tool for learning. The program is designed collaboratively to enrich family learning through art at school, at home, and in the Museum. In the nine-session program, children and parents developed language and literacy skills through viewing, discussing and creating art. For the culminating event, the teachers put together a colorful exhibition of all the work that was created this year. Arte Juntos – Art Together is made possible with a federal grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services.
