Katonah Museum of Art Receives National Endowment for the Arts Grant

Grant to support an art and culture-based program for new immigrant families

April 28, 2014 Katonah, New York - National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa announced today that the Katonah Museum of Art (KMA), is one of 886 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. The Katonah Museum is recommended for a $20,000 grant to support the development of KMA’s program -  ArteJuntos / ArtTogether -  designed to empower low income immigrant parents as resourceful facilitators of their children's learning at home, in the Museum and in their communities. The KMA will develop an outcomes-based framework for participant learning that supports Pre-K school readiness assessments used by our partnering schools. This form of collaborative programing builds community and invests in the future of Museum visitors. Results from this project will be shared with other museums interested in engaging young immigrant families. For more information, visit www.ArteJuntosArtTogether.com

ArteJuntos/ArtTogether (AJ/AT) is a bilingual art and culture-based family literacy program that introduces low income, educationally at-risk preschool children and their families to the Katonah Museum of Art, a resource for informal learning, fun, and discovery. The program empowers parents of children, ages 3-5, as their child’s most important teacher, and introduces children to activities that support their success in school and in life. AJ/AT provides critical early learning experiences that promote school readiness and parent engagement for Westchester’s growing Latino community.

NEA Acting Chairman Shigekawa said, "The NEA is pleased to announce that the Katonah Museum of Art is recommended for an NEA Art Works grant. These NEA-supported projects will not only have a positive impact on local economies, but will also provide opportunities for people of all ages to participate in the arts, help our communities to become more vibrant, and support our nation's artists as they contribute to our cultural landscape."

“The Katonah Museum of Art appreciates this affirming support from the NEA. With the grant award, we can strengthen and embolden our model community-based program,” said Darsie Alexander, Executive Director of the Katonah Museum of Art.

Art Works grants support the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and enhancement of the livability of communities through the arts. The NEA received 1,515 eligible applications under the Art Works category, requesting more than $76 million in funding. Of those applications, 886 are recommended for grants for a total of $25.8 million.
