Barks from the Dog Park

News about the Canine Commons at Beaver Dam Park in Bedford

Spring is an exciting time at Bedford's Canine Commons dog park. Just like us, the dogs are ecstatic about the green grass, warmer weather and longer days. One visit and you can sense their happiness in the air. So, what's new and exciting at the dog park this year?

Well, the Parks Department has installed a new waste collection system, doing way with the old cardboard and wire type bag units and replacing them with a biodegradable bag system. Feedback has been positive. Not only is the new system user friendly, it saves money over the more expensive system used in the past. Thanks to Bill Heidepriem and his wonderful staff for this new feature.
Several other projects have been targeted for this season by the town, in cooperation with the Bedford Dog Owners Group (BDOG), which include:

• reseeding of the large dog enclosure. We will move the large dogs up to the agility enclosure while this project is completed;
• resurfacing the entryways to the large and small dog enclosures, resulting in less mud during wet weather and less dust during dry weather;
• addition of a shade structure to the small dog enclosure, which gets very little shade during the hot summer days. BDOG will purchase and donate this item to the Town of Bedford, at a cost of $3,000.00.

Last year, BDOG donated funds to repair all the fences at the dog park, and added 5 new park benches at a cost of $4,300.00

Speaking of BDOG, we just had our annual reorganization meeting and elected officers for 2013-2014, They are: Len Martello (President), Diane Fuller (Vice-President), Rose Goldfine (Treasurer) and Suzanne Sunday (Secretary). At-large directors include Barbara Harris, Lisa Weiss and our newest member, Nancy Mendes. Keep abreast of BDOG activities at our website: http://www.bedforddog.org/

BDOG's mission is to advocate on behalf of dog park users, working in partnership with the town to enhance the park. Currently, over 150 registered dog owners use the park as a means of recreation and socialization for their canine friends. Registration, which is done through the Town Clerk's office, is $45.00 per year for Bedford residents, $125 per year for non-residents.

For more information about registration, contact the Town Clerk's office at 666-4534.
