Give Your Kids the 'Edge' in Sports Gear

Tired of seeing kids on local sports fields wearing ill-fitting gear, Bob Nemeth has taken matters into his own hands and is opening up Edge Sporting Goods, a new high-end shop that will offer custom fit sports gear, among other merchandise.

The shop, opening in the space formerly occupied by The Perennial Chef in Bedford Hills, will sell helmets, shin guards and chin straps, along with other protective gear under brands like Rawlings and Easton, said Nemeth, a 53-year-old father of three. His background is in finance—he worked 14 years at JP Morgan and for 7 years at Elm Ridge Capital, among other positions—but he's passionate about sports.

"We're offering a technology that is 'gel to shell,' where we'll heat up the equipment and fit it to a young athlete. It hardens to a custom fit, and will serve as great protection," he said.

The shop will focus on football, baseball, lacrosse and hockey. Nemeth is still working out details for some partnerships—potentially one with Nike.

His own kids—a 17 year old Fox Lane High School student, a 15 year old at Rippowam and 9 year old at Cisqua—play a variety of sports, which Nemeth supports. He said too often, kids are specializing in one sport which can lead to injury.

Edge Sporting Goods will also offer athletic footwear. Nemeth hopes to open June 3.
