Patch Comments: 'I Want to Help'

The Hudson Valley responds to the Newtown, Conn., shootings on Patch.

"No matter how you look at it, something has to change, this is just unacceptable." -- Issy

"http://signon.org/sign/gun-control-now-1?source=s.em.cp&r_by=6440092. Petition Background: On December 14, 2012, at least one gunman entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and opened fire, killing what is currently being reported as a minimum of 27 people, 20 of whom were children. Completely innocent unarmed victims. Columbine. Red Lake Minnesota. Essex Vermont. Lancaster. Virginia Tech. To name a few. How many more innocents must die at the hands of an antiquated and oft-misinterpreted amendment? Enough. It's time to stop the violence." -- Dr. Oxana Litvine

Medical Examiner: Newtown Shooting Victims Suffered 'Devastating Set of Injuries'

"As a police officer for 20 years, I think we need to stop giving the shooter in these situations any media attention, that means do not name the shooter, do not discuss anything about him and when referring to him, refer to him as a coward/murderer (Do not give him the "fame" he may be looking for, or the thought that his name will be everywhere and will always be remembered). Give all the media attention to the victims and the hero teachers that help save the other students lives. The only people that have the right to know the information about the shooter are the families of the victims and the people directly involved in the incident." -- A

"Not only do teachers have to teach, but they need to know how to save lives. Also thanks to the teachers that saved all the other children." -- mike sullivan

"It is way past time to just express our condolences at these horrific tragedies and to say that we must do something. If a few people are sickened by a bad patch of peanut putter, the FDA immediately shuts down the company. Now we have 20 children killed at a school and more people will die on the streets of the US tonight. No other society permits this type of action to happen year after year and neither should we. I am calling on our local governemnt in the Town of Clarkstown to stand up and pass tough new gun control laws. No one should be permitted to have an automatic weapon, no one should have high capacity cartridges, and if you have a gun, be prepared to have to have annual inspections to ensure your gun is properly locked. I plan to be at the next town meeting, enough is enough! Who else will stand with me?" -- Jack Borowsky

"And I will say it again- the constant blaming of an inanimate object for these sick acts is stupid. We need to address why people are doing these things. Maybe the degradation of the family unit, decreasing morality and coddling are affecting this generation in a negative way. Maybe having a mother and a father who sit at a dinner table and spend time with their kids is a good idea." -- Jenga

Hurting Today In Wake of Newtown Shooting

"As a parent it is my worst nightmare to send my children out into the world into an environment where they should be safe and have them harmed. Today's events in CT brought me to tears and my heart goes out to all those who lost their lives and their families. They are all in my prayers. I am truly heartbroken." -- Edna J. Ward

"Can't we postpone the political debate for a few days, and not use this as a talking point for and against the possession of guns? Cool it with the blame game for a week or so, both sides of the issue." -- James Adnaraf
