Healthy Life Series Continues in February at Phelps

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center's Healthy Life series continues to offer the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups. All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow, unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for February follows:

Tuesday, February 4 - Look Good . . . Feel Better is a free 2-hour program at Phelps Memorial Hospital that teaches beauty techniques to women undergoing c ancer treatment. It includes a consultation with a professional hairstylist and a cosmetologist. Attendees are given a complimentary makeup kit and wig to take home. The program is offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society, The National Cosmetology Association, and the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) Foundation. From 6 - 8 pm in Room 545 of the Medical Services building at Phelps, 755 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Advance registration is required. Call 914-366-3315 or 366-3345.

Tuesday evenings beginning February 4 - Evening Bereavement Support Group
This 8-week bereavement support group for adults meets Tuesday evenings from 6 - 7:30 p.m. beginning February 4. Meetings are held in Room 225 of the 755 building on the Phelps Memorial Hospital Center campus. Attendance at all 8 sessions is recommended. Suggested donation: $10 per session. Tuesday, February 4 - Conversations about Dementia; Tips to Help with Family Conversations Geriatrician Cathryn Devons, MD, and Patricia Gaston from the Alzheimer's Association are presenting a workshop that will offer tips on how to have an honest and caring conversation with family members about having a cognitive assessment, when to stop driving and planning for future legal and financial needs. Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow from 9:30-11:00am in the Board Room. The event is free and open to the public. Partially funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the New York State Office for Aging, and the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services. Wednesday, February 5 - Mind Games is a free activity and a fun way for seniors to help stimulate thei r minds and improve cognitive functioning by playing board games and computer games that stimulate memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning. Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow in the Boardroom (park in back of the hospital) from 2 - 3:30 p.m on the first Wednesday of every month. Wednesdays, February 5 and 19 - Blood Pressure Screenings Conducted the first and third Wednesday mornings of every month at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow from 9:30 - 11:30 am in the Walkway Conference Room. Thursday, February 6 and 20 - Afternoon Bereavement Support Group An ongoing support group for adults struggling with the loss of a loved one meets from 2 - 3:30 pm in the Phelps Hospice office, located on the Phelps campus in the James House. Led by Bess Steiger, LCS W, bereavement coordinator. Suggested donation: $10 per session. Call 914-366-3325 for information.

Thursday, February 13 - The Breakfast Club is a series of free breakfast meetings designed especially for seniors. Each session includes breakfast, a presentation on a healthy lifestyle topic and a light exercise program. The group meets monthly, except for August and December, 8:30-10:30 am in the Cafeteria (G Level) at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow. Thursday, February 13 - Osteoporosis Support The Phelps Osteoporosis Center offers free monthly educational programs for osteoporosis patients the second Thursday of the month. Attendees will become more knowledgeable about osteoporosis, learn nutritional guidelines to improve bone health, practice bone-strengthening exercise routines and develop techniques to compensate for skeletal limitations. Tuesday, February 18 - Senior Steps Part of the Vitality program at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, Senior Steps includes health screenings and special events for seniors. The club meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 10:00-11:30 am in Room 225 of the Medical Services Building at Phelps, 755 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Registration is required.
