A man involved in a one-car crash was found by Bedford police just after 11 p.m. off Route 22/Old Post Road near Crusher Road in Bedford.
Det. Sgt. Tom Deibold said the driver was found ejected from his car, which had flipped "a few times." There was no evidence at the scene that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident, he said.
The driver suffered injuries and was taken to Westchester Medical Center. During his interview with police, he initially told the investigating officer, Andrew Klein, that he was carjacked in Norwalk, CT. He said he was in the passenger seat when the accident happened.
Upon further investigation, officers found window damage on the driver's side and the driver's side airbag deployed. In addition, responding firefighters from the Bedford Fire Department used infrared technology to search nearby woods but did not locate anyone. After several hours, the driver revised his story to police and admitted he had been driving the vehicle.
The driver has been charged with third-degree falsely reporting an incident, an A misdemeanor. He has been scheduled for an appearance in Bedford town court.
