Man Charged With Felony DWI

The information below was provided by Bedford police and does not indicate a conviction.

A Putnam Valley man was arrested after he drove his car off the shoulder near a home on Allison Road in Katonah, Bedford police said.

Officers responded to a call about the car from a resident on Dec. 26 at about 7:45 p.m. When they arrived, they found a red Chevy SUV on an embankment adjacent to a driveway.

A strong smell of alcohol came from the driver's side of the car, officers said. They also noticed an open container of vodka on the front seat. Police interviewed the driver, Paul Costello, 40, and asked him to submit to field sobriety tests, which he failed.

Police took Costello back to headquarters for processing. He submitted to a breathalyzer test, which revealed he had a .28 BAC, over three times the legal limit.

He was charged with aggravated DWI, and felony DWI because of a prior DWI conviction. He also faces a violation charge of consumption of alcoholic beverages for the open container.

After he was taken to Northern Westchester Hospital for treatment, Costello was released on $500 cash bail. He returns to Bedford court on Jan. 10.
