A New York City man stopped for speeding on Interstate 684 in Bedford was found to have an illegal handgun and was wearing body armor, according to State Police.
Frederick Humphrey, 26, of 67-39 Kissena Boulevard, Flushing, Queens, was arrested by state troopers from the Somers barracks after a 12:45 p.m. incident Friday that started when a 2007 Mercedes Benz headed northbound on the interstate was stopped for traveling 93 mph in a 65 mph zone.
Troopers said they soon discovered the registration for the Mercedes had been suspended by the state Department of Motor Vehicles. In the process of impounding the car, troopers said they found a loaded, unregistered .380 caliber handgun.
Humphrey was arrested on a charge of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. As he was being arrested, troopers said they found that Humphrey was wearing a bullet proof vest.
The owner of the car was in the car, but was not arrested.
Humphrey was also charged with unlawful wearing of a body vest, a felony. Humphrey was arraigned and ordered held in the Westchester County Jail in Valhalla pending a court hearing.
