Police: Suspicous Pipe Found at Bedford Home Not Explosive

Westchester County and Bedford police investigated a PVC pipe found by landscapers and determined it was not a threat to the community.

A suspicious pipe found at a home on Cantitoe Street in Bedford briefly caused the closure of Route 22 between Bedford Center Road and Matthews Mil Road.

However, after a two-hour investigation police officials determined the pipe was not an explosive device and did not pose a threat to the community, according to Bedford Police Lieutenant Jeffrey Dickan.

Bedford police initially responded to a call at 9:40 a.m. after the PVC pipe was discovered in a garden bed by landscapers tending to the property. The pipe, capped on both ends, had a wire approximately an inch in diameter extending from one side.

Bedford police called the Westchester County Department of Public Safety to investigate; fire and emergency services were on standby as a precaution. The bomb squad determined the pipe was not an explosive device.

"We took every precaution and are happy to report that it wasn't a dangerous situation," said Dickan.
